Laguna health and spa is entirely luxurious and if you are needing a relaxing 'all-about-me,' kind of day, I would heartily recommend it.
It is expensive. but from the minute you walk through the Park Plaza Hotel doors, you are expecting to pay a premium. The spa, gym and swimming pool are in the heart of the hotel, so you experience the Plaza grandeur before even setting foot in your destination.
The pool is clean, large and every time I have visited, quiet. The water is fairly warm, you are given time and space to do lengths at your own pace in a tranquil environment. Most importantly, some might say, there is a jacuzzi and a steam room- heaven!
The gym is interesting, there is an exercise space in which classes take place, but the gym equipment is up to date and big, you hop on them like horses! They line the walls of the gym space, some next to windows so you can look out. Its very elite.
My favourite thing about Laguna is the Spa, particularly their choice of products. Being an Elemis fan, I was delighted to find that they stock the full range and also offer all the treatments (my favourite is the Tri- Enzyme resurfacing facial.) There is also Dermalogica on offer too. The prices are a bit over budget, but I reason that you get what you pay for in terms of quality of service and quality of product and also the atmosphere is extremely relaxing.

I wish I could stick with gym memberships.
It's not Laguna's fault - I just realised that I prefer outdoor running and cheap Argos dumbells to treadmills and snazzy weight machines.
I initially signed up for three-month membership, and, at £46 a month, it wasn't cheap, but I think it was worth the cost (they usually have offers on, so it's worth checking before signing up).
The facility showcases three floors of brand-new equipment, a variety of workout rooms, and even a Power Plates machine.
But I think the main attraction here is the pool, which I was told has considerably lower levels of chlorine than those at other gyms (saving your skin and hair from the invariable dry-out). It wasn't as crowded as I expected either, even during weekdays from about 6ish onward.
I've experienced a few treatments here (a shoulder massage and facial), and it's definitely something I'd book again. If you're a member, all treatments are 10% off, with 50% off on selected Mondays.
The staff are really friendly, not to mention the fact they use Elemis products on my sensitive skin!

The park plaza certainly is a jack of all trades. From the fabulous hotel itself to the excellent Laguna bar and this, the spa and gym smack bang in the middle of Cardiff.
A friend of mine was a member there and so suggested I come and try it out for the day. Of course we bypassed the gym and went straight for the equally taxing pool/steam room/jacuzzi.
The pool area is an oasis of calm in the middle of a very busy city. The walls are tranquil blue and it's has the feeling of being pure indulgence. The water is treated with a combination of UV and chlorine which means you don't get that OTT feeling of dry horrible skin that you get in other pools that just use chlorine.
People watching is great here, for some reason the most beautiful men in Cardiff chose to swim at this establishment. Great if you're a bit of a perve like me but it's advisable to keep your wits about you to avoid drowning.
